Goo Goo Dolls are an American rock band from Buffalo, New York, formed in 1986. Their early records were rooted in a much rougher punk-driven sound, but by the mid-1990s the band had moved toward melodic alternative rock, scoring its first major hit with Name from A Boy Named Goo. Goo Goo Dolls reached an international audience with Iris, written for the film City of Angels and later included on Dizzy Up the Girl; the song earned two Grammy nominations. Together with Slide, Black Balloon and other hits, it helped define the band’s blend of guitar-driven rock, strong melodies and emotionally direct ballads. |
