Leevi and the Leavings was a Finnish band founded in 1978 by Gösta Sundqvist, Risto Paananen and Juha Karastie. Sundqvist wrote the music and lyrics for virtually the group’s entire repertoire, turning stories about ordinary people and unlucky characters into songs that mixed melancholy with humor and rock with Finnish popular music. During the 1980s and 1990s, Leevi and the Leavings became one of Finland’s most popular bands, with songs such as Pohjois-Karjala, Teuvo, maanteiden kuningas, Itkisitkö onnesta? and Poika nimeltä Päivi. Despite their popularity, the band almost never performed in public. Their only concert as Leevi and the Leavings was an appearance in Finland’s 1981 Eurovision selection with Sinisilmä, mansikkasuu; after that, they concentrated on studio work. The band released 16 studio albums and came to an end after Gösta Sundqvist’s death in 2003. |
