Neapolitan song (Canzone Neapoletana) is a genre of folk music from Naples. The genre flourished during the late 19th century and early 20th century. During that time famous local musicians and poets tested their skills composing a multitude of songs. The peak of recognition of Neapolitan song is the Festival di Sanremo. The decline of the genre started in the 60s, at the same time that the Festival di Sanremo went into crisis. The songs started to lose the connection with their classical heritage. However the genre is still very famous. |
