Mika Newton is the stage name of a Ukrainian singer, Oksana Grytsay. Her producer put the name together from those of Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones) and Mick Box (Uriah Heep), and Newton which sounds like “new tone”. Mika has been on stage since she was a child and she became famous after winning the “Black Sea Games” (“Chernomorskiye Igri”) contest in Ukraine in 2002. It was then that producer Yuri Falyes discovered her. Mika became well-known in Ukraine and other eastern European countries for her songs, which were used as TV show soundtracks. She also founded the charity “For Peace” (“Za Mir”) in 2008, which added to her popularity. In 2011 Mika Newton won the national selection for Eurovision and became her country’s representative in Düsseldorf.
