Markos Vamvakaris (Μάρκος Βαμβακάρης, 1905 – 1972) was a Greek composer and performer, who is considered to be the founder of the rebetiko genre. Markos’ life represents a complex creative path from the inception of interest in his musical style to a complete and lengthy rejection by the society with the subsequent revival of his popularity. Having received wide acclaim by the end of his life, Markos became a symbol of an entire musical era in Greece. |
