Tori Amos musical 'due this year'

Tori Amos' long-awaited musical will open at the National Theatre later this year - two years after it was first announced.

The singer-songwriter, who had a number one hit with Professional Widow in 1996, has written music and lyrics for The Light Princess which is based on a story by Scottish writer George MacDonald.

The show was originally scheduled to appear at the theatre, on London's South Bank, in April 2012. It has been scheduled for some time in October this year.

National Theatre director Nicholas Hytner said the delay was down to the fact that musicals "take a hell of a lot of writing and developing and testing out".

He said: "There have been books written about why good musicals are so hard to come by. It's because so many different people have to get themselves travelling along the same road.

"You write a brilliant song and you suddenly find that 20 minutes of the show leading up to the brilliant song no longer work, and it kills the next 45 minutes: so, do you keep the brilliant song or do you chuck out the brilliant song?"
