Tributes paid to G Live singer

Grieving members of the Fisherman's Friends today spoke of "a much-loved and valued friend", following the death of singer Trevor Grills on Monday night.

Mr Grills, one of 10 Cornish-based performers with the sea shanty group, was seriously injured following an incident at the G Live venue in Guildford, Surrey, on Saturday.

The band's promoter, Paul McMullen from Stockport, died at the scene with leg injuries after he was trapped underneath a metal stage door. Mr Grills suffered severe head injuries in the incident and was taken to hospital in London, where he later died.

Speaking from the band's fishing village of Port Isaac, bass singer Jon Cleave said in a statement: "This is an announcement that we really wish we didn't have to make. It is with great sorrow that we have to tell you that Trevor Grills - husband of Leslie and dad to Paul, Mark and Josh, lifetime friend and Fisherman's Friend - died of his injuries last night in St George's Hospital, Tooting.

"Our deepest love and thoughts are with Trevor's family and we would like to sincerely thank everyone for your messages of love and support. We know that Trevor, who was a proud yet modest Cornishman, would be quite overwhelmed by it all."

Mr Grills, who at 54 was among the younger members of the vocal harmony ensemble, often took the lead on the Friends' more melancholic pieces.

The band have enjoyed commercial success since being discovered singing on the quayside in Port Isaac - a tradition they have continued.

The Friends, who reached the top 10 in the UK charts in 2010, played to an audience of thousands at Glastonbury's iconic pyramid stage in 2011, as well as advertising seafood on television commercials.

Some fans have claimed failures at the venue could have been responsible for the two deaths.

But a spokesman for G Live dismissed the suggestions, saying it "would not operate if that was the case".
