Rihanna and Coldplay for Super Bowl

Rihanna, Coldplay and Katy Perry have been asked to perform at the 2015 Super Bowl.

The three acts are amongst the hottest contenders to take to the stage at half-time at the US sports tournament near Phoenix.

Unlike previous years, the Wall Street Journal claimed that the artists were asked if they would be willing to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or make another type of financial contribution, in exchange for the half-time gig, but noted that the pay-to-play approach had "chilly" responses.

NFL spokeswoman Joanna Hunter refused to comment on the rumours, saying that the league's contracts with performers were confidential and that its only goal was "to put on the best possible show".

She added about the line-up: "When we have something to announce, we'll announce it."

Bruno Mars and Red Hot Chili Peppers performed at this year's event, while Beyonce, Madonna, the Black Eyed Peas, Usher and Slash are among the big acts who have taken to the Super Bowl stage.

Super Bowl XLIX is to be played outside Phoenix on February 1.
