NewsOctober, 18 Cyndi Lauper insists she never feuded with Madonna in the '80s(Cover) - EN Music - Cyndi Lauper has insisted she never actually feuded with Madonna in the 1980s. Rumours of beef between the popstars began to circulate in 1983, around the time the Girls Just Want to Have Fun hitmaker released her debut album She's So Unusual and Madonna dropped her first record, titled The First Album. But despite the gossip, during an interview with People published on Thursday, Cyndi revealed that she never once had an issue with her fellow artist. "As soon as I saw her do Like a Prayer, I was like, 'Oh my God. Ah, I love her!' And I've loved her ever since," she declared. Cyndi also claimed that music industry bosses were the ones who started the feud rumours. "In the '80s, they started to pit women against each other," the 71-year-old continued. "Well, actually, it started in the '60s, the pitting of women against each other and wanting them to go back to what they'd been doing before women's lib or whatever." In June, Cyndi described in an interview for The Guardian how executives at her record label originally wanted her to be the next Barbra Streisand before they settled on pitting her against the Queen of Pop. "As if you could only have one woman who is successful. What the hell is that about?" she sighed. "That woman's been entertaining us for years. She's made great pop songs. I want to be competitive, but not pitted against another woman. I'm not into that." Cyndi is currently preparing for her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour. The 35-date trek will kick off in Montreal, Canada on Friday night and wrap up in Paris, France next February.
