Lennon placard sold for £97,250

A placard made by John Lennon when he held his infamous bed-in with Yoko Ono has sold at auction for just short of £100,000.

The sign, which reads Bed Peace, sold today at Christie's auction house in South Kensington, London.

It was bought by an anonymous telephone bidder for £97,250.

The placard was made by Lennon when he held his week-long bed-in in Montreal, Canada, in 1969 in protest at the Vietnam War.

The couple had previously held a similar event during their honeymoon in Amsterdam - an event immortalised in the Beatles song The Ballad of John and Yoko.

A letter by Lennon's fellow Beatle, Paul McCartney, offering an audition for the position of drummer in the group, went for £34,850.

The letter, written in response to an advertisement in the Liverpool Echo, was found folded up in a book at a car boot sale in Bootle.

Christie's director Neil Roberts said: "We are thrilled with the results of the Rock and Pop Memorabilia sale which was led by pieces relating to important moments in the development of The Beatles. Following an ongoing trend for popular culture sales at Christie's, internet bidding played a significant part in the sale, with over 36% of lots bought or directly underbid online."
