Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi said he has been "overwhelmed" by the support of fans after it was revealed he has been diagnosed with cancer.

And he said he was pleased that work on the band's reunion album will continue after his bandmates pledged to head to the UK to carry on recording.

The hard rock pioneers recently reformed with their original line-up to work on their first album together for 33 years.

The rest of the band asked fans to send "positive vibes" to the 63-year-old musician earlier this week as they announced he needed to undergo treatment for lymphoma.

In a message on his website, Tony said: "I just want to say how overwhelmed I am with all your messages of support, thank you so much.

"Well, it's not what I wanted for Christmas, that's for sure, but now I can't wait for the test results to come in and get going with the treatment."

Tony and colleagues Ozzy Osbourne, bass player Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward announced last year that they were together again once more.

They had been writing and recording in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin on an album due for release in the autumn.

Black Sabbath had also lined up a series of major dates during the year.

Tony added: "It's really good that the guys are coming over so that we can continue working on the album as things are going great in the studio."
