NewsJuly, 20 Maynard: I'm not the next BieberConor Maynard has revealed he doesn't want to be compared to Justin Bieber. Despite the comparisons to the Boyfriend superstar, the British 19-year-old insisted he wants to be seen - and heard - as his own person. "A lot of people had it in their minds that I was the next Justin Bieber. But I didn't want to follow anyone," he told the Daily Telegraph. "I had to find out what kind of an artist I was, because I had never been in a studio, I hadn't even written a song. I had this motto: 'It's better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation'." He added: "I wanted to put my own unique stamp on everything because that was how I was successful on YouTube. I took covers and switched them up and did it my own way, and people became a fan of me rather than a fan of the songs." Conor - whose debut album Contrast is released on July 30, and new single Vegas Girl on July 23 - picked up tens of millions of online hits after covering American R&B singer Ne-Yo's Beautiful Monster before signing a record deal, and now looks to be the future of pop. "That was crazy, I didn't realise what it really meant. I hit two million, five million, ten million. I was happy with a few hundred views a month," he recalled.
