Power of Love reaches number one

The song from John Lewis's Christmas television advert has shot to the top of the singles charts.

Gabrielle Aplin's dreamy take on Frankie Goes to Hollywood's The Power of Love has been blasted into living rooms for the past month as the festive retail season has got under way but had previously only reached fifth place.

It is the latest song to have achieved huge success after being featured on the department store's seasonal advert, with Ellie Goulding's cover of Elton John's Your Song making it to number two in the charts in 2010 and Taken by Trees' 2009 rendition of Guns & Roses' Sweet Child O' Mine also shifting thousands of copies.

The single knocked Olly Murs off the top spot and into number three with Troublemaker, featuring US rapper Flo Rida.

The former X Factor contestant's third album Right Place Right Time remained at number one for the second week running however, and with an 127,000 copies sold in its first week, it is also the fastest-selling male solo album of the year.

Festive songs are in abundance this week, with crooner Michael Buble's Christmas at number two, Rod Stewart's Merry Christmas Baby at number four and Only Boys Aloud's Christmas Edition at number 32 in the albums chart.

The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl's seminal A Fairytale Of New York has re-entered the Top 40 for the eighth year running and is at number 15 in the singles chart this week, while Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You is at number 20, Wizzard's I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday is at 31, Wham's Last Christmas is at 34 and Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody is at 35.

Elsewhere, boyband One Direction dropped one place to number three in the album chart with Take Me Home while Bruno Mars was at number two in the singles chart for the second week running with Locked Out Of Heaven.

X Factor judge Tulisa's latest single, Sight Of You, only managed to chart at number 18 with the only other new entry in the singles chart being Pitbull's Don't Stop The Party at number 16, The Official UK Charts Company said.
