Lily Allen regrets bitcoin refusal

Lily Allen has revealed she regrets turning down "hundreds of thousands of bitcoin" as payment for a live performance.

The 28-year-old singer - who recently made her comeback after retiring from music four years ago to start a family - revealed on Twitter she was once asked to live stream a concert to the virtual world Second Life. But the payment was offered in the then unheard-of digital currency bitcoin which are now worth more than 600 times their original value.

Lily tweeted: "About 5 years ago someone asked me to stream a gig live on second life for hundreds of thousNds [sic] of bitcoins, "as if" I said. #idiot #idiot."

Bitcoins were launched publicly in January 2009 and were originally worth just fractions of a penny. Even as late as 2011 they had a value of just 15p each. But they have taken off as a secure online currency and are now worth around £590 each.

So a fee of 200,000 bitcoins would now be worth £118 million.

According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2013, Lily's fortune is around £6 million.
