Macca says bye to Candlestick Park

Sir Paul McCartney is set to play a concert at a famous San Francisco landmark before it is demolished.

The Beatles star is scheduled to perform at Candlestick Park tonight (August 15), and the gig is expected to be the last event at the US stadium - the former home of American football side the 49ers and baseball team the San Francisco Giants - before it is demolished to make way for a planned housing, retail and entertainment development.

The concert is even more poignant because t he Beatles played their last official concert at Candlestick in 1966. At the time Sir Paul apologised to the crowd for the weather, noting it was "a bit chilly".

The Stick opened more than 50 years ago and served as home field for the 49ers and Giants. The 49ers will play at a new stadium about 45 miles south starting this year.

The Giants played their last game at Candlestick in September 1999.

San Francisco police said anyone caught taking chairs or any other mementos from the stadium during the concert could face vandalism charges.
