Vamps win at Radio 1 Teen Awards

The Vamps were the big winners at the Radio 1 Teen Awards, walking off with three prizes.

The band beat established stars like One Direction and Ed Sheeran to take home Best British Single for Last Night, Best British Group and Best British Breakthrough.

They tweeted after the awards: "THREE!!!!! @BBCR1 we're speechless (and sweaty!) #R1TeenAwards."

The event was hosted by Nick Grimshaw and Rita Ora - who went through four outfit changes - and other winners included Sherlock, which picked up the gong for Best British TV Show, and Ed Sheeran, who was named Best British Solo Artist.

Lorna Fitzgerald, who plays Abi Branning in EastEnders, won the top acting prize.

She tweeted: "Thanks so much to everyone who voted! I'm so happy right now. #lucky."

The Vamps, Rixton, Ella Henderson and Labrinth were among the artists who performed at the event at Wembley Arena.

US star Ariana Grande wowed the crowd when she took to the stage in a skimpy silver leotard and cat ears.

The awards also celebrated teen heroes nominated by listeners.

It included a special prize handed out in memory of teenage cancer victim and fundraiser Stephen Sutton, who became a household name before his death this year.

The Stephen Sutton Teen Hero Award was presented by Grimmy and Chris Sutton, Stephen's brother, to 16-year-old winner Jack from Doncaster who has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity despite suffering from Moebius Syndrome, an extremely rare condition which means he suffers from sight, hearing and balance problems and has no facial nerves.

Other teenage winners included an apprentice who is working on a project to help young people find employment, a carer who is helping other young people suffering trauma and an anti-bullying ambassador, all nominated by listeners of Radio 1.
