MTV VMAs 2020: Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande mask up for futuristic performance
Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande stole the show at the MTV Video Music Awards as they masked up for a futuristic performance of their award-winning song, Rain On Me.
Gaga was delighting fans with a glorious medley of her tunes when she was joined by 27-year-old Ariana for a supercharged first live performance of their collaboration.
Gaga - who scooped artist of the year and the first-ever MTV Tricon Award - was first to appear on stage, surrounded by backing dancers for her fan favourite song 911.
She was soon joined by Ariana, with the pop superstars - both wearing masks - performing against a futuristic-themed set, in line with Gaga's Chromatica album.
It was the first time Rain On Me had been performed live on TV as Ariana wore a plunging purple crop top with a matching mini skirt.
After the song was finished, Gaga and Ariana were spun inside an elevator-like booth, with only Gaga returning to the stage.
She sat down at a brain-shaped piano for a rousing rendition of Stupid Love, another track from Chromatica.
Gaga said: "I want you to love yourself, tonight and every night. Celebrate yourself. Love who you are. Be kind. Mask up. Be brave - and braver all the time."
The singer wore five different outfits to collect her five awards.
Rain On Me was nominated for seven awards and won three - song of the year, best collaboration and best cinematography.
Ariana also won best music video from home for Stuck With U, her collaboration with Justin Bieber.
It was a day that Ariana had been looking forward to and and tweeted ahead of her performance: "Happy VMA day [SIC] so excited for u see our first ‘Rain On Me’ performance tonight! @ladygaga is f***ing incredible and I’m so honored to share this moment with her and u all.
