Paul Ryder, Happy Mondays bassist, dies aged 58

Happy Mondays bassist and founding member Paul Ryder has died aged 58, the band have confirmed.

In a statement on Facebook, the band said: “The Ryder family and Happy Mondays band members are deeply saddened and shocked to say that Paul Ryder passed away this morning.

“A true pioneer and legend. He will be forever missed. We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time.

“Long live his funk.”

Ryder, a member of the band since its inception in 1980, rejoined the group for its latest reunion in 2012.

He played alongside his brother, Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder and was credited with giving the band its signature groove, which was influenced by the electronic dance music of the era.

Synonymous with the “Madchester” music scene, the group achieved success with their blend of psychedelia and alternative rock alongside other burgeoning northern bands.

Celebrities have started to pay tribute to Ryder on social media.

Singer-songwriter and former lead singer of The Stone Roses Ian Brown tweeted: “Rest in peace Paul Ryder. A great friend, a great musician, a great fella. Big love to Amelia, Jacob, Sonny, Chico and the family and band. Love ya [sic] longtime Pabs x.”
