Sky Ferreira fighting to get back her songs from record label

Sky Ferreira is still trying to recover the songs she recorded after a "fraught" split with her record label, Capitol Records.

"People keep telling me I should just re-record the songs and it's like, yeah, Taylor Swift can do that because she's a billionaire," the indie pop singer said in an interview with Vogue magazine.

Ferreria's new release, Leash, written for the Nicole Kidman film Babygirl, is out this week. It is her first as an independent artist since being dropped from Capitol Records in late 2023.

It marked the end of a relationship that turned rocky even before Ferreria's debut album, Night Time, My Time, came out in 2013.

Reportedly unhappy with the material she was delivering, Capitol stopped funding the album's recording sessions, leaving Ferreira to cover the costs herself.

Her confidence paid off when the album dropped to unanimous praise.

Ferreira is currently unable to share any of the music she recorded while she was signed to Capitol. "I can't right now, even though I was the one who paid for all of my studio sessions. I'm working to try and get some of those songs back, but I'm not getting every single one."

Leash will drop on Thursday 5 December, accompanied by a music video.
