Katie Melua speaks of breakdown
Katie Melua has revealed that she suffered a breakdown following her rise to fame.
The 26-year-old singer, who shot to stardom with her debut single The Closest Thing To Crazy, said she had a brief stay in hospital last year.
She told the Daily Mail the breakdown was brought on by her heavy workload, saying: "I've had a bit of a breakdown and been very unwell... I had to drop out for a bit."
She said: "The fact is, I just couldn't go on any longer. I knew there was something seriously wrong because I was just sitting in a chair staring into space."
Katie, who was the biggest-selling British female artist, added: "I was working myself into the ground."
The singer-songwriter's spokeswoman confirmed she had suffered a breakdown but said she has since recovered.
She said: "She's looking forward to going back on tour which was meant to take place last year but was postponed.
"She was working non-stop for about seven years and her body just said 'enough is enough'."
Georgian-born Katie found fame after being discovered by songwriter Mike Batt in 2002.
She went on to perform for Nelson Mandela and in 2005 she dined at Buckingham Palace.
