Mariah 'naive' about Libya gig

Mariah Carey has admitted to being 'naive' and 'embarrassed' by her New Year's Eve performances at Gaddafi-hosted parties.

The Grammy-winning songstress jetted to the Caribbean island of St Barts for the birthday gig, thrown by the sons of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, but has been forced to defend herself after the recent controversy surrounding Libya.

In an official statement on her website, she said Gaddafi was in her opinion a "vicious, crazy dictator" and said: "I was naive and unaware of who I was booked to perform for. I feel horrible and embarrassed to have participated in this mess.

"Going forward, this is a lesson for all artists to learn from. We need to be more aware and take more responsibility regardless of who books our shows. Ultimately we as artists are to be held accountable."

Mariah, who is expecting twins with husband Nick Cannon, plans to donate funds from her new single Save The Day to support human rights issues and might set up her own charity to address the subject. She previously gave millions to charity from the sales of past hits Hero and One Sweet Day, featuring Boyz II Men.

Her spokesperson Cindi Berger told People: "Mariah has and continues to donate time, money and countless hours of personal service both here and abroad."

She is the latest celebrity, joining Nelly Furtado and Beyonce, who has tried to repair any damage that links to the tainted regime of the Libyan leader may have caused them.
