NewsNovember, 8 Ian Gillan recovering after successful procedure
Deep Purple have pushed back their European tour after a medical emergency involving frontman Ian Gillan, who is now on the mend. The singer posted an update for fans on 7 November, saying he had undergone a procedure the day before that went well. He explained that he needs to rest so he can recover fully and be in the best possible shape when he returns to work. Gillan thanked everyone for their patience and understanding, adding that he was grateful and sorry for the trouble caused. The trouble began earlier in the month, when the band said on Facebook that Gillan had been taken to hospital because of a medical emergency. As a result, two shows could not go ahead as planned: the first at the QI Arena in Leipzig that evening, and the second the following night at the Sporthalle in Hamburg. The band described the cancellation as a great disappointment. No details were given about the exact nature of the singer's condition. Gillan later thanked fans for their good wishes and passed on the band's decision to postpone the remaining dates of their European and UK tour until further notice. He said he was very sorry for any inconvenience but believed the move was in everyone's best interests. Gillan has led Deep Purple across several spells, starting with his first stint in 1969. His voice is on many of the group's biggest songs, among them their signature 1973 track, Smoke on the Water.
