Rihanna Shooting Suspect Ruled Fit for Trial

A judge in Los Angeles has decided that the woman charged with firing at the Beverly Hills residence of Rihanna and A$AP Rocky in March is mentally competent to face trial.

Judge Maria Cavalluzzi issued the ruling during a Tuesday hearing at Los Angeles County court. After months of psychiatric review, she declared that criminal proceedings would resume.

Ivanna Ortiz has been held in custody since her arrest in March. She now faces 13 felony charges: one count of attempted murder, ten felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and three felony counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or camper. A conviction could bring a sentence of up to life in state prison.

The 36-year-old was sent for a competency evaluation in May, at which point her attempted murder case was put on hold.

Ortiz is accused of using a semi-automatic rifle to shoot at Rihanna's house, an attack that led the singer to push her husband, A$AP Rocky, to the ground for cover.

She has entered a not guilty plea on all charges.

Prosecutors say Ortiz drove to the property on 8 March and fired the rounds while the home was occupied by the couple, their three young children and the singer's mother.

At an earlier hearing, Deputy District Attorney Alexander Bott described the incident as an extremely dangerous, deliberate shooting in occupied homes. He noted that the gunfire lasted several seconds and could have been fatal.
