Lulu and Jack Savoretti Shine at Radio 2 in the Park

Day two of BBC Radio 2 in the Park took place in Stirling under bright skies, drawing thousands of music lovers to a site overlooked by Stirling Castle. After a lively Friday night DJ set from Sara Cox, Gary Davies, DJ Spoony, Michelle Visage and Rylan, the main stage on Saturday opened with Texas in the afternoon, with pop veterans ABC following.

Hosts Shaun Keaveny, Paddy McGuinness, Mark Goodier and Jeremy Vine were seen dancing at the side of the stage while ABC frontman Martin Fry made a joke about guitarist Pete Rinaldi’s missing luggage. Fry told the crowd that the band always performs in suits, then explained that British Airways had lost Rinaldi’s suit that afternoon and asked the audience to be patient, adding: “Don’t ask for your money back.”

Scottish music icon Lulu was greeted with a huge ovation and celebrated the sunshine, calling out: “Hello Stirling! Oh my God look – the gods love us.” Emeli Sandé also performed a set filled with strong vocals and heartfelt songwriting.

Jack Savoretti gave an emotional performance and spoke about his strong ties to Scotland, saying: “It is stunning, I mean just being in the shadow of this castle is… intense… is the word I would always describe Scotland.” He went on: “The first time I ever heard an audience sing along to one of my songs was Scotland… it blew my mind.” Savoretti also thanked listeners, saying: “For 20 years this radio station has looked after me... So, it's nice to finally meet you face to face.”

At 4 p.m., a video message from Trevor Nelson was shown. He told fans: “I’m so gutted that I cannot be there with you lot... so many of you guys have sent me best wishes, love and support – it’s got me through.” He said he would return to the studio on Monday at 2 p.m.

The festival continues tonight, with The Script frontman Danny O'Donoghue saying he was “rearing to go” before their set, which leads into a grand finale from soul legend Chaka Khan.
