NewsSeptember, 29 Bono Felt Like a Stalker Asking Rosalía for Song OK
U2 frontman Bono has joked that he felt "like a stalker" when he asked Rosalía for permission to put out a song inspired by her. The Irish band are promoting their sixteenth studio album, Carnaval de Luz, which features the track The Mirror Maker (Rosalía). Speaking to Rolling Stone in an interview published on Monday, Bono – whose real name is Paul Hewson – said the Spanish star's 2025 album Lux had a big influence on him. He admitted it was "just a little embarrassing" that she had become so popular before the song came out, adding that it did not bother him and comparing the situation to how everyone knew about Martin Luther King. He went on to explain that a mutual friend, Penélope Cruz, put him in touch with Rosalía. He recalled calling Cruz and asking what he should do, and she told him to simply call Rosalía. His response was that he looked like a stalker. Bono said the Despechá singer gave her approval quickly. He described her as really encouraging and said she had made him laugh a lot, noting that the two have never met face to face. At 66, he added that he did not think he could meet her now and was working up the courage to send her the final mix. In the same conversation, the With or Without You hitmaker said Rosalía is an artist with the ability to "go through the mirror". He brought up Patti Smith as someone who had that quality for him while he was growing up, and said there are many such artists, though not enough. He called Rosalía one of them, tying it to the idea that people are body, soul and spirit – an old-fashioned, quaint notion, in his words – and said she approaches it with great courage and self-effacing humour. There is not just physics, he added, there is metaphysics. Carnaval de Luz, which includes the single Silencio, is due out on 13 November.
