NewsOctober, 31 Cara Delevingne explains why music came later
Cara Delevingne has explained why she held off on launching a music career until now. The British model and actress, 34, brought out her first album, Not Normal, in September. In an interview with Bustle, she said her problems with addiction were part of the reason she waited. "Not being a sober person, I was so all over the place," she explained, adding that at the time she was "on the edge of so much self-hatred". She went on to say that she could just about cope with people calling her not pretty, ugly or bad at acting, but that criticism of her music would have been too much. She admitted she "just wouldn't have been able to handle" that kind of judgement back then. After years of drug addiction, the Paper Towns actress entered rehab in late 2022 and has stayed sober since. Music has been part of her life for a while: in 2020 she sang backing vocals on Fiona Apple's Fetch the Bolt Cutters. The two later worked together again, co-writing Need It for Delevingne's debut record. The Suicide Squad star recalled that they put the verses together by "sending pictures of Post-it Notes back and forth to each other". Of collaborating with Apple, she said the singer is not especially audible on the record, but described her as an inspiration both as a person and as an artist. "I absolutely adore her," Delevingne added.
