John Legend on Marriage, Muse and Writing About Love

John Legend dropped by Heart Breakfast to talk about his new album, Muse, bringing along some exclusive clips of the fresh material and explaining how his marriage to Chrissy Teigen feeds into his songwriting.

Chatting with presenters Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman, the multi-award-winning singer-songwriter gave a peek at his quiet life at home, far from the red carpet. Asked about a typical date night once the couple's four children are in bed, Legend said they like nothing more than a simple evening on the sofa. He might have a glass of wine, while Teigen, who is sober, goes for her own drink of choice as they settle in front of the TV. Their viewing, he noted, swings between prestige, high-brow series and easygoing reality shows.

On the balance of power in the household, Legend happily admitted that Teigen is in charge, joking that, as every husband knows, his wife is firmly the boss.

When the conversation turned to whether personal arguments ever end up in his songs, Legend made clear that despite the dramatic relationship stories on Muse, things at home are remarkably calm. The pair share a deep friendship and seldom fight, so he rarely has cause to write about conflict. And having set an exceptionally high romantic bar with his hit All of Me, he joked that he has literally given her everything already.

To keep the new record varied, Legend said he looks outside his own home life for ideas. Since his relationship with Teigen is stable, grounded and centred on raising their four children, he deliberately turns to broader themes to spice up his lyrics instead of simply documenting the family's day-to-day routine.
