Piero, Argentine Music Legend, Dies at 81

Piero, the Argentine singer-songwriter whose voice and songs touched generations of Latin music fans, has died at the age of 81.

He passed away in Buenos Aires on 7 October, a loss confirmed through his social media accounts.

An Instagram message expressed profound sadness at the news, adding that his voice, his songs and his message of peace would remain with us always. It said his light would keep shining wherever his music is heard, and thanked fans for their messages on behalf of his family and friends.

Born Piero Antonio Franco De Benedictis, he rose to fame under the name Piero with his debut album, Mi Viejo, which featured the title track.

That song, a heartfelt tribute to his father, is sung at birthday celebrations across South America as the definitive homage to fathers everywhere.

Written with José Tcherkaski, Mi Viejo was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007.

Nine years later, in 2016, Piero received a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

His final tour took place in June of last year, marking 60 years in music and 80 years of life with the Piero, Mi Querido Viejo (My Dear Old Man) tour.
