NewsOctober, 5 The Strokes Play Sold-Out New York Homecoming
The Strokes came back to their own corner of New York for a sold-out night at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, where 40,000 people turned out. It was the band's first big headline show in the city since 2023, and they brought Beach House, TV on the Radio and Fcukers along as support. The set pulled from across their career, and they wrapped things up with Ode To The Mets – a fitting choice given that the Mets' stadium sits just a short walk away. They also nodded to their hometown roots with a lively take on This Is Not, originally by fellow New York group Blonde Redhead. Politics and culture were part of the evening too. Vermont senator Bernie Sanders and New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez both made surprise appearances on stage. Sanders spoke about the band's support for economic justice and basic human rights, and later labor organizer Chris Smalls and commentator Lee Camp came out to urge the crowd to get involved civically. Earlier that day, frontman Julian Casablancas led an on-site S.O.S. – Earth Is A Mess panel with activists and strategist Maya Rupert. Next up, the group is taking its new album, Reality Awaits, on a fully sold-out European run. It's their first record in six years and was made with producer Rick Rubin. The tour opens with two nights at London's O2 Arena, then moves through Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin and other cities, with major dates in South America and Australia to follow. Between the new momentum, strong reviews for the album and shows like this one, The Strokes are still making a case for themselves as one of the standout alternative rock acts of the 21st century.
