Diddy ordered to pay $500,000 in NBC defamation case

Sean 'Diddy' Combs has been ordered to cover legal costs after his defamation lawsuit against US television network NBC over the 2025 documentary The Making of a Bad Boy failed.

A court order obtained by Billboard says Combs must repay $478,000 (£361,000) that NBC spent persuading a judge to dismiss the case earlier this year.

Combs filed the suit against NBC in early 2025, seeking $100 million (£75 million). He claimed The Making of a Bad Boy pushed a "false narrative" linking him to the deaths of The Notorious B.I.G. and Kim Porter.

In April, Judge Phaedra F. Perry-Bond ruled that NBC had met proper journalistic standards by making clear Combs denies all such claims, and that interviewees who aired the theories had their own biases against the now-imprisoned mogul.

The judge dismissed the lawsuit under New York's anti-SLAPP statute, which quickly disposes of meritless cases that threaten First Amendment-protected free speech.

That law allows a successful defendant to recover legal fees spent in the process, and the judge found NBC qualifies for reimbursement.

However, the judge found the number of hours billed by legal firm Gibson Dunn "excessive" and cut $512,000 (£386,000) from the original $990,000 (£747,000) bill.

Combs is currently serving prison time for arranging cross-country prostitution events. He is appealing the sentence, arguing it was unduly harsh.

Meanwhile, the Bad Boy Records founder still faces dozens of ongoing civil sexual misconduct lawsuits, in which he denies all wrongdoing.
