R&B Singer Freddie Jackson Dies at 70

Freddie Jackson, the R&B singer whose smooth voice defined a generation of love songs, has died at 70. His family shared the news on Instagram, saying he passed away on Monday, shortly after his birthday.

In their post, the family remembered him as far more than a performer. They described him as a kind and generous person who gave everything to his fans, his loved ones and his music. For decades, they wrote, his songs served as the backdrop to love stories, celebrations and cherished memories, and that legacy will endure.

Jackson's 1985 single You Are My Lady remains his signature track and is still one of the most requested songs at weddings and engagement parties worldwide. The family closed their message by thanking everyone who ever sang along, danced or felt something when he performed, adding that the fans were like family to him and that he carried their love with him always.

No cause of death was provided. In 2024, Jackson revealed that he had been diagnosed with kidney disease. At the time, he spoke about the difficulty of the journey but noted that he was not facing it alone, crediting close friends, his manager, his music family and his supporters for keeping him going.

Born in Harlem, New York, Jackson began his career as a gospel singer. His velvety delivery brought him two Grammy nominations along with a string of platinum and gold records. In a 1989 interview with the New York Times, he explained that his music was meant for people who like to hold hands at concerts, and he expressed a hope that less hate would make life's chaos and trouble less overwhelming.
