Country Star John Anderson Dies at 71

John Anderson, a country music singer-songwriter, has died at 71. A family representative shared the news on social media on Wednesday. No cause of death was given.

In a statement, the family described him as a gifted country singer whose voice and songs reached countless people, and as the heart of their family – someone who made them laugh, loved them fiercely and made ordinary moments feel special. They said they were completely heartbroken and asked fans to keep them in their thoughts and prayers, adding that while his music will live on, his greatest legacy for them will always be the love he gave his family and the memories they will carry forever.

Anderson entered the music business with his 1977 single I've Got a Feelin' (Somebody's Been Stealin'). He went on to become known for songs such as Wild and Blue, Black Sheep, Straight Tequila Night, Money in the Bank and Seminole Wind. His twenty-second and final studio album, Years, came out in 2020, and he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.

Several country artists paid tribute after the news broke. Reba McEntire called him one of her favorite people in the business and said she would miss him, while Luke Combs wrote, "Rest easy John. Thanks for the songs."

Jason Aldean said Anderson was one of his all-time favorites and that he grew up listening to his father's old John Anderson albums and learning to play guitar on them. He added that he had been lucky enough to meet and perform with him a few times and sent thoughts and prayers to the family.

Tim McGraw said he was completely heartbroken, noting that he had spoken with Anderson only after the Hall of Fame induction at the CMA Theater in Nashville, Tennessee, the previous weekend. He recalled that Anderson was in good spirits and that they talked, laughed and sang his songs together. McGraw said there would never be a stylist in any music as defining as Anderson, called the loss devastating and sent love to his family and the country music community.

Anderson is survived by his wife Jamie and two daughters.
