Nelly: Taylor Swift paid me $50,000 in a bag

Nelly has shared a story about the time Taylor Swift handed him $50,000 (£44,000) for a short guest appearance at one of her shows.

Speaking on The Breakfast Club, the rapper – whose real name is Cornell Haynes Jr. – said the Shake It Off singer rang him one night out of the blue and asked whether he would join her on stage at an upcoming concert.

He explained that Swift and a group of friends had worked out a routine to his 2002 track Hot in Herre and were keen to perform it for the audience.

Nelly recalled being in St. Louis while she was in Houston. She told him she had two shows there, that day and the next, and asked if he could come down and perform the song. She also said she did not want to disrespect him and admitted she did not really have a budget for that kind of booking.

The hip-hop artist then remembered her offering to send her private jet for him.

He pointed out the funny contrast: she had just said there was no real budget, yet she promised the plane, his room and everything else, adding that all she had was about $50,000. Nelly joked about whether she could put the money in a McDonald's bag, and said he would have done the job for free anyway.

Right after he performed, Swift's manager tossed him a McDonald's takeaway bag stuffed with cash. Nelly recalled his surprised reaction and stressed that the money was not the point. He said she simply told him the jet was ready whenever he wanted it, and put his group up in the presidential suite – he believed it was at the Four Seasons near the stadium – with the entire top floor. They never really saw the room, heading from the show straight back to the airport.

Representatives for Swift have not commented on the story.
