NewsOctober, 16 Missy Elliott to Get Icon Award at Gala of the Stars
Missy Elliott will be honoured with the Icon Award at this year's Gala of the Stars, the yearly fundraiser for Dancers Against Cancer. The trophy will be handed to her by the previous year's winner, Janet Jackson. A four-time Grammy winner, the Work It artist made history as the first female hip-hop act to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and later as the first female rapper to enter the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. "Missy Elliott embodies everything the Icon Award stands for," said Noah Lands, executive producer of the Gala of the Stars, in a statement. "Her pioneering artistry has inspired generations of performers, and having Janet Jackson, last year's honoree, present the award makes the occasion even more meaningful." Elliott was diagnosed with Graves' disease in 2008, which led to a long period away from the spotlight. The gala will also recognise dancer-choreographer Toni Basil, whose 1982 single Mickey reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100, with the Lifetime Achievement Award, and director and choreographer Vincent Paterson with the Vanguard Award. Paula Abdul will present the Paula Abdul Legacy Award, though the recipient has yet to be revealed. Dancer and TV personality Maksim Chmerkovskiy will host the event on 22 October at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
