NewsOctober, 15 Chance the Rapper Wins Case Against Ex-Manager
Chance the Rapper has come out on top in the last stage of a long court fight with the manager who once worked with him. A judge in Chicago ruled in the artist's favour, requiring Pat Corcoran to give up commissions and payments connected to merchandising deals. The total could go beyond $1.5 million, or £1.14 million. Back in March, a jury sided with Chance the Rapper, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, on claims involving contract and interference. Now the court has settled the remaining claim about breach of fiduciary duty, which had been left for the judge to decide. In a statement, the No Problem artist said he was glad to put this period behind him and looked forward to sharing his side of the story one day. He also thanked the courts and, above all, God for staying faithful. The ruling did not state an exact sum for Corcoran to repay. However, Chance's representatives said he would probably have to hand over as much as $1.5 million in management fees the rapper had paid, plus what they called kickbacks from merchandise vendors. The judge turned down the rapper's bid for punitive damages. A spokesperson for Corcoran said the court found no grounds for Chance's claim of more than $10 million, or £7.6 million, in damages. The spokesperson added that they were pleased the court agreed Pat had done years of valuable work that Bennett accepted and benefited from.
