Billy Joel Auctions Bikes After Driving Ban

Billy Joel has shared that he is no longer able to drive, following his diagnosis with a rare brain condition.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, the musician said he is not permitted to get behind the wheel. Because of this, he is putting more than 70 of his motorbikes up for auction.

Joel explained that he once owned over a hundred motorcycles, but pointed out that you can only ride one at a time. Now in his 70s, he admitted he can't ride as often as he once did.

He also said he has no wish to die like a bug on a windshield, which is why he decided to send many of the bikes to auction.

The Grammy winner has been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, or NPH, a condition in which cerebrospinal fluid accumulates inside the skull and puts pressure on the brain. He noted that the diagnosis makes driving a bit iffy, so he concluded it was time to hand things over to someone else.

Joel spoke warmly about his passion for motorcycles, biking and driving, and about the anonymity he enjoyed. He also loved customising the bikes, making modifications and tinkering with them. He stressed that he was not a collector but a rider, and felt the moment had come to let it all go.

His NPH diagnosis came last year. Joel also told the outlet that he cannot perform at present, because his neurologist warned him that every show is like getting a concussion. Before he knows whether he can perform again, the Piano Man singer will have to undergo a series of tests.
