Ex-Shadow guitarist Jet Harris dies

Shadows guitarist Jet Harris has died aged 71 after a two-year battle with cancer.

The bass player, who was made an MBE in 2009, died at the home of his partner Janet Hemingway in Winchester today (Friday).

A family friend speaking on her behalf said: "Jet was a one-off. He had a wonderful sense of humour and was incredibly courageous and incredibly loyal to his friends and family."

They went on: "There are three Shadows forums on the internet and the fans are just pouring out their grief and love for him.

"He was unusually well-loved by the fans. He always had time for the fans and he would never let a fan go without speaking to them or signing whatever they wanted him to sign."

Sir Cliff Richard paid tribute to his former bandmate, saying: "Jet was exactly what the Shadows and I needed - a backbone holding our sound together.

"Jet, the bass player, will always be an integral part of British rock'n'roll history. Losing him is sad - but the great memories will stay with me. Rock on, Jet."

The star, who was born Terence Harris in London, found fame for his string of chart hits with the Shadows and as a solo star in the early Sixties.

In 1962 he left the band and had solo hits with Besame Mucho and The Man With The Golden Arm.

He later worked as a photographer although he released a new album, The Journey, in 2007.
