Katy Perry is US TV station MTV's first artist of the year.

The pop siren eclipsed Adele for the honour as MTV tried to call attention to its musical roots.

MTV said Perry's achievement of tying with Michael Jackson on five No 1 singles from the same album made her omnipresent in pop culture.

Perry is trying for a sixth with The One That Got Away.

Adele's Rolling in the Deep was a pretty easy choice for song of the year.
