Stars shine on Brits red carpet

Florence Welch showed she was number one in the glamour stakes at the Brit Awards as she became pop royalty in a dazzling gown.

The chart-topping star showed it was Florence and the McQueen as she showed off a dress by Sarah Burton, who designed the Duchess of Cambridge's wedding gown.

Florence wore a textured peach dress with a lace train, cut to the thigh at the front with Indian hand jewellery and platform gladiator sandals, as she arrived at London's O2 Arena for the pop world's biggest night of the year.

The dress for the Florence + The Machine star is one of Alexander McQueen designer Burton's first major outfits since last April's royal celebration.

Also adding style to the red carpet this evening was Katie Melua who arrived with fiance James Toseland, the former World Superbike champion.

The Closest Thing To Crazy singer - who only recently became engaged - wore a black Project D dress with a feathered jacket and Top Shop stilettos.

Many of the biggest names in music were gathering for tonight's awards ceremony which will culminate in an outstanding contribution prize for Blur. But the band's members did not look as though they had put as much thought into their outfits as the younger generation of stars.

Frontman Damon Albarn arrived wearing a flatcap, Harrington jacket and jeans, while guitarist Graham Coxon wore a faded denim jacket and shades. Even bass player Alex James managed to spoil the effect of his blue suit by wearing it with a T-shirt and mismatching buttons.

Nominees such as Ed Sheeran and Olly Murs graced the red carpet, along with Emeli Sande who already has the satisfaction of going home with one award tonight as the winner of the Critics' Choice prize.
