Fans' bid for Pistols Jubilee No 1

Punk fans are hoping to make 1970s group the Sex Pistols number one during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Campaigners want the band's controversial single God Save The Queen to top the singles chart during the celebrations in June.

The "alternative national anthem" is being re-released 35 years after it was originally in the charts, a spokesman for Universal Music said.

The track, which featured a defaced image of the Queen on the cover, was released during the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977.

But many media outlets refused to play the controversial single even though it outsold the number one single The First Cut Is The Deepest by Rod Stewart, Universal Music said.

In a fan page on Facebook, one campaigner says: "This song was denied the No.1 for the Silver Jubilee in 1977, where many other charts at the time (including NME) placed the Pistols at the top spot. Time for a re-match...who's in?"
