Nelly Furtado: I'm like a veteran

Nelly Furtado has confessed she feels like a veteran of the music scene.

The Canadian singer, who released her first album Whoa, Nelly! in 2000, was reminded of her age when she recently worked with Michael Angelakos, frontman of US band Passion Pit.

"He was on his keyboards and he turned around and said, 'Whoa, Nelly! was my favourite album when I was 10 years old'," she told The New Paper.

"But it made me feel like a veteran too. And the trend keeps on repeating itself. I keep meeting other artistes who'll tell me that they remember going to my concerts when they were really young."

The Promiscuous Girl singer, 33, revealed she doesn't feel her music can be pigeon-holed.

"I don't see my music as fitting into the North American pop sensibility that much," she said. "I think of it internationally. I want my music to be more classic.

"I do like what's on the radio now but I always need to sound like myself, so that the truth comes out. It doesn't matter if it sounds like what's going on in contemporary pop culture."
