Closing ceremony boosts album sales

Musicians who performed at the Olympics closing ceremony have sent the album charts into a spin, with Emeli Sande climbing to the top and alternative-rockers Elbow jumping 133 places.

Sande's performance saw her record Our Version Of Events crash in at number one after lingering at number four last week.

Rihanna's sixth album Talk That Talk slipped from number one to number eight.

Elbow also profited from their closing ceremony performance, scoring a massive sales boost of their fourth studio album The Seldom Seen Kid.

The band, from the North West, performed two songs at the ceremony, wowing fans who then bought the record in such numbers that it rose from 139 to number six in the charts.

Elbow also achieved the most impressive jump in the singles chart. After playing their One Day Like This at the ceremony it landed at number four. Previously it was at 125.

The Spice Girls' one-off reunion at the show also helped line their pockets: their greatest hits compilation ascended the album chart from 164 to number 18.

A remix of Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill also featured in the ceremony and sparked sales of her compilation record The Whole Story, jumping to number 21 from 92.

In the singles chart, 21-year-old Rita Ora went straight in at top spot with How We Do (Party), knocking Wiley's Heatwave to number two.

Kate Bush's remixed single Running Up That Hill entered the top 10 at number six.
