Grimshaw defends Radio 1 Robbie ban

Nick Grimshaw has insisted Robbie Williams is "not relevant" to the teenage listeners of Radio 1.

The new Breakfast Show host backed up the BBC's decision to remove the 38-year-old singer from the Radio 1 playlist because he is too old for their audience.

Nick, 28, told Radio 5 news: "I've never listened to a Robbie Williams song but I really like him. To 13 and 14 year olds he's not relevant... they've got One Direction. I liked Take That when I was little but I'm not little any more."

But as Robbie's latest single Candy became his 14th number one chart success, Nick played the song on his breakfast show this week and admitted: "I quite like the new song."

Radio 1's head of music George Ergatoudis is responsible for categorising tunes in order of importance for the station's playlist, and Robbie didn't make the cut.

A spokesman for the BBC said last week: "Radio 1 see it not as a question of age, but of relevance. They think there are acts more appropriate to their target audience of 15-29."
