Four Grammys for rap duo Macklemore

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have emerged as the early big winners at the Grammys, taking four gongs including best new artist.

The rap duo also won best rap album for The Heist, beating efforts from Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, Kanye West and Drake. Their hit song Thrift Shop won best rap song and rap performance.

"Wow, we're here on the stage right now," said Macklemore, thanking fans first, then his fiance and team. "I want to say we made this album without a record label, we made it independently and we appreciate all the support."

Beyonce kicked off the ceremony with a steamy and smoky performance of Drunk In Love. Her husband Jay Z emerged in a fitted suit to rap his verse, and the couple held hands and danced together.

Macklemore & Lewis's wins come after the Grammy rap committee almost ousted the duo from its categories. A source said the committee rejected the pair, but that was later overruled by the general Grammy committee.

The duo are also nominated for album and song of the year.

Justin Timberlake has won two awards, best R&B song for Pusher Love Girl and music video for Suit & Tie - which also earned Jay Z a Grammy.

Adele, who dominated the Grammys two years ago, was also an early winner. The British singer won best song written for visual media for Skyfall, which also won an Oscar and Golden Globe last year.

Elsewhere, Alicia Keys won the best R&B album gong for Girl On Fire, Rihanna's Unapologetic took the contemporary album title, and Vampire Weekend were named the alternative music album winners for Modern Vampires Of The City.

Daft Punk offering Random Access Memories won the Dance/electronica album gong, Led Zeppelin were behind the best rock album with Celebration Day, and best rock performance went to Imagine Dragons for Radioactive.

On stage at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, Madonna, Carole King, Pink, Swift and Katy Perry were all wowing the crowds.

Former Beatles Ringo Starr and Sir Paul McCartney, who has two nominations, were to sing separately on the telecast.
