Charity song set to topple Cheryl

Strictly Come Dancing is set to topple The X Factor in the singles chart - with a charity track featuring Craig Revel Horwood on course to knock Cheryl Fernandez-Versini off the number one spot.

The dance judge is among stars who feature in Gareth Malone's latest All-Star Choir project which is behind the latest Children In Need single, a cover of the Avicii hit Wake Me Up.

Also among the performers on the single are Countryfile host John Craven, Great British Bake Off co-host Mel Giedroyc, comic Jo Brand and actor Larry Lamb.

Midweek chart details released by the Official Charts Company today showed that the song is on course to go to number one at the weekend, deposing X Factor judge Fernandez-Versini from the position after one week with her song I Don't Care.

BBC1's Strictly has been hammering its ITV rival X Factor in the ratings this year.

If the song holds its lead until the weekend, the track will be the third involving Malone to top the charts. He has previously hit the top with his Military Wives choir at Christmas 2011, and the following year he was involved with the official Diamond Jubilee single Sing.

Malone said: "To see the number one within reach this week is just wonderful for this group of unlikely choristers. Everyone involved has worked so hard to create this record and it's fantastic to see the support we are getting in return.

"BBC Children in Need has a huge impact on the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK and if this single helps then it will be a proud day for us all."

Also featured on the track are actresses Alison Steadman and Linda Robson, Radio 1 DJ Alice Levine and Blue Peter's Radzi Chinyanganya, as well as a number of children who have benefited from the BBC charity.

Ed Sheeran is on course for number two with Thinking Out Loud - like last week - with I Don't Care expected to drop to three.

In the album chart, Pink Floyd are way out in front in the race to number one with their first new studio album for 20 years, The Endless River. It sold more than 92,000 copies in its first two days on sale, making it one of the fastest sellers of the year.

The Endless River was assembled from material recorded during the sessions for 1994 release The Division Bell and feature keyboard player Richard Wright, who died in 2008.

The album was launched on Monday with a playback hosted by the remaining duo, guitarist David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason. The event featured a lightshow created by Peter Wynne Willson, who created the oil projections which accompanied the group's celebrated performances at the UFO Club in the late 1960s, in the days when Syd Barrett fronted the group.
