Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith go head-to-head for Song of the Year

Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran lead the nominations for Song of the Year at the BMI Awards.

The Brits both have two nominations each in the category.

Ed’s hits Sing and Don’t will compete against Sam’s tracks Stay With Me and Latch, his collaboration with Disclosure.

British acts Clean Bandit, Coldplay, Rixton and Charli XCX, who features on Iggy Azalea’s song Fancy, are also up for contention.

Completing the category are Norwegian pop duo Nico & Vinz with Am I Wrong, and Sweden’s Tove Lo, whose sleeper hit Habits (Stay High) reached number three on the US Billboard charts.

Ed was nominated last year for Everything Has Changed, his duet with Taylor Swift, but was beaten by Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams’s hit Get Lucky.

The award honours the most played songs on US TV and radio by European artists and songwriters, to celebrate the acts breaking into the US.

In 2012 it was won by Adele for Rolling In The Deep, and in 2013 Sweden’s Jorgen Elofsson and US writing partner Ali Tamposi took the crown for penning the international hit Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You), performed by Kelly Clarkson.

The ceremony will take place in London on October 19.

The full shortlist for Song of the Year is:

Am I Wrong – Nico & Vinz.

Don’t – Ed Sheeran.

Fancy – Iggy Azalea feat Charli XCX.

Habits (Stay High) – Tove Lo.

Latch – Disclosure feat Sam Smith.

Me And My Broken Heart – Rixton.

Rather Be – Clean Bandit.
