Beyoncé explains decision to move away from music videos

Beyoncé has revealed why she has decided to move away from music videos.

Throughout her career, the singer has released a number of iconic music videos to accompany her songs, including 2003's Crazy in Love and 2011's Run the World (Girls).

Several of her music videos have also been recognised at awards shows, including the video for 2019's Brown Skin Girl, which won a Grammy Award for Best Music Video.

In recent years, however, Beyoncé has moved away from music videos, releasing her two most recent albums, Renaissance and Cowboy Carter, without any.

"I thought it was important that during a time where all we see is visuals, that the world can focus on the voice," the hitmaker told GQ in a new interview. "The music is so rich in history and instrumentation. It takes months to digest, research, and understand. The music needed space to breathe."

Beyoncé went on to say that music videos can distract from the music.

"Sometimes a visual can be a distraction from the quality of the voice and the music," she explained. "The years of hard work and detail put into an album that takes over four years! The music is enough."

The Texas Hold 'Em singer added, "The fans from all over the world became the visual. We got the visual on tour and from my film."

Last year, Beyoncé embarked on her ninth concert tour in support of Renaissance. In December of that year, she released a concert film titled Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé.
