Marling takes top spot again

Singer-songwriter Laura Marling has followed her success at the Brits by being named best solo artist at the Shockwave NME Awards.

The star, who grew up in Hampshire and rose to fame as part of the nu-folk scene, scooped the award at the event at the Brixton Academy in south London.

Her first two albums were shortlisted for the Mercury Awards and she picked up the gong for British female solo artist at last week's Brits.

American rockers My Chemical Romance won two awards - for best international band and best video for their song Na Na Na. The New Jersey-based band kicked off the ceremony, which was hosted by comedian and Shooting Stars regular Angelos Epithemiou.

Muse were crowned best British band ahead of Arctic Monkeys, Foals, Kasabian and Biffy Clyro. But they lost out on the best live band award to Biffy Clyro, who broke off from their US tour to attend.

Synthpop duo Hurts were named best new band and Canadian rockers Arcade Fire won the best album award for the critically-acclaimed The Suburbs.

Best track award went to Foals for Spanish Sahara, seeing off competition from Cee-Lo Green, Gorillaz, Janelle Monae and Mark Ronson in the process.

Professor Green won the best dancefloor filler award for his single Jungle and Skins was declared best TV Show. The Teenage Cancer Trust outstanding contribution to music award went to PJ Harvey and the evening's highest accolade, the godlike genius award, went to Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl.

NME editor Krissi Murison said: "Not only is the international rock scene in great shape but a wide spread of genres are represented by our winners tonight.

"It's great to see My Chemical Romance lead the way scooping two awards. And with Muse, Biffy Clyro, Laura Marling, Professor Green, Hurts and Arcade Fire amongst others all coming out top in their nominated categories, 2011 is set to be a great year for music."
