Spice Girls musical director named

A musical inspired by the songs of the Spice Girls has signed leading British director Marianne Elliott to bring it to the West End.

Viva Forever is being produced by Judy Craymer, who also produced the hit show Mamma Mia! featuring music from Abba, in association with Universal Music, Simon Fuller and the Spice Girls.

"I am delighted that Marianne has agreed to direct Viva Forever," Craymer said.

"With her theatrical aptitude for exploring strong women and their relationships and her meticulousness to detail, she is absolutely the right person to direct this new musical which is all about female friendship, celebrity and fame.

"I'm so happy to have her on board, together with Jennifer Saunders, who has written the musical."

Elliott is an associate director at the National Theatre, where she has directed shows including War Horse, Saint Joan and Harper Regan.

Viva Forever is due to open in the West End at the end of 2012.
