SuBo's Lent sacrifice helps charity

Susan Boyle is looking forward to tucking into some sweet treats after completing the "tough" challenge of giving them up for Lent for charity.

The Britain's Got Talent sensation gave up the indulgence to support the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) campaign to combat global poverty.

This year its WEE BOX, BIG Change initiative focused on the charity's long term development work in Haiti and its emergency response following the earthquake in January last year.

SuBo was inspired to take part in memory of her mother who was a big supporter of the charity and always had a WEE BOX in the house during Lent.

The challenge asked people to give up a favourite treat for Lent, between 9 March and 21 April, and put the money they save into one of the boxes.

She said: "I supported SCIAF's WEE BOX, BIG Change campaign by giving up sweets and chocolates for the 40 days of Lent but I must say I found it very tough. I have to admit that I slipped up once or twice along the way but made it through and am now really looking forward to tucking into some nice sweet treats over Easter.

"I was delighted to get such a warm welcome at SCIAF when I attended the launch at the start of Lent.

"Meeting the staff who do such a fantastic job helping people in some of the poorest countries in the world was really inspiring. They know from first hand experience the huge problems that people in poor countries face and the massive difference support from Scotland can make."

She added: "I feel a special connection to Haiti as I sang on Simon Cowell's charity single just after the disaster."
